After being politely booted from the Hurstville Boys High School Band for breaking down into funk-beats during the Theme To Hogan's Heroes, John Blake AKA [DJ] Soup set off to become a pro basket baller. Being 201cm was a handy start and his quest took him to China, Lebanon, twice across the USA and a stint playing professionally with the Sydney Kings. He then realised there was more to life than chucking a pig-skin and started pursuing his real love, music.

Soup was into sampling early on using the pause button on his ghetto-blaster to make freaky scattergun mix tapes for all the local breakers. Then with the help of John Riley AKA Father O Five they started a hip hop crew called The Fonke Knomaads in 1987. Together they experimented with tape loops of things like Shirley Bassey mixed with Public Enemy's Rebel Without Pause.

Soup's latest album Beatroot (The edible Root Of The Beat) is described as "a freak out of quirky samples and big dope drums". Out on Invada Records and with September 11th as the release date - it is bound to make an impact!

BIO:

Soups first release was with The Fonke Knomaads. They released a 12 inch single on coloured vinyl called "The Hills are Alive with The Sound of.. " (1993). One of the tracks on it is featured on the 15.oz 15 years of Australian Hip Hop compilation put out by Crookneck records.

Signing to well known Sydney label, Creative Vibes John released an influential album in 1997 called Souperloops, which became feature album all around the country and inspired many budding young musicians to take up sampling. A critically acclaimed record with infamous Fat Pizza star Sleek the Elite followed as well which ingeniously fused beats both Western and Arabic cultures.

Two more Soup albums were released - "Electro" (1999) and "From Anuva Planet" (2000). This album featured collaborations with the likes of Gift of Gab from Blackalicious and Swollen Members from Canada. The Gab track got remixed by Katalyst and DJ Vadim.

Soup was a resident DJ at J Katz's neo-gogo club Sounds Of Seduction for 4 years and has recently had a hit-listed record with Damien Millar singing a Eurythmics cover.
